CBC ISSUES
STATEMENT
ON CITY COUNCIL’S
“FICTIONAL” BUDGET PRACTICES
New
York, NY – April 4, 2008 – The Citizens Budget Commission (CBC) released
today the following statement on the “fictional” budget practices of the New
York City Council. The statement reads as follows:
The
use of public funds should be transparent and straight-forward. There is no
excuse for fictional items in a budget. Elected officials should be accountable
for their budgeting decisions, and that is only possible if the public knows
where the money is going.
All
elected officials bear responsibility for the budgets that they adopt, and
Speaker Quinn, in particular, should be held accountable for the City Council’s
fiscal practices. She must now rebuild the public’s confidence in the
truthfulness of the Council’s budget and its future integrity.
Founded
in 1932, the Citizens Budget Commission is a nonpartisan, nonprofit civic
organization devoted to influencing constructive change in the finances and
services of New
York City
and New
York State governments.
